The Brockman Hall for Physics will be a 110,000 sqft facility that will include vibration and noise controlled underground laboratories to support work in atomic, molecular and optical physics; biophysics; condensed matter physics; nanoengineering and photonics. The building will allow Rice to create a state-of-the-art facility that meets the exacting requirements of modern physics and to consolidate its research in fundamental and applied physics. In addition to vibration control, laboratories in the new building will have substantially better temperature, humidity and air-flow control. The building is set to be certified LEED silver and is scheduled for completion and move-in early 2011.

• Construction of the basement structural slab is complete
• First floor slab is well under-way with concrete pours scheduled throughout the coming weeks
• Columns supporting the second floor are being poured atop completed first floor sections
• Installation of the new water line along Campanile Road to support this project is nearly complete, with road repairs to be completed by December 17

11/30/2009

• The basement “mud-slab” is complete
• All construction activities in the basement and within the perimeter of the building will now be above the concrete
• The first slab pour for the first floor is complete
• The first section of the first floor slab and first section of the “lid” have been placed
• Installation of the new water line along Campanile Road to support this project is nearly complete, with road repairs to be completed by December 17

• The basement construction is progressing with the exterior walls being sprayed with concrete and followed with a pour concrete wall
• Recent rainfall has slowed construction of the basement slab, however 30% of the basement structural floor slab has been poured
• Installation of the new water line along Campanile Road to support this project is nearly complete, with road repairs to be scheduled soon

8/21/2009

• 172 Soldier piles, with a typical depth of 50’, have been finished
• The entire cap beam is complete
• Both the drilling rigs have been removed from site
• The site’s tower crane has been installed
   

7/7/2009

• New utility tunnel is in operation
• Old utility tunnel has been demolished
• Building site has been lowered by 6 to 8 feet
• Soldier piles are going in with 54 of the 172 complete

6/11/2009

• Excavation of the site has begun
• Pier drilling and soldier piles are scheduled to begin the week of June 15
• Increased truck traffic will be apparent on the construction site and surrounding areas – caution should be exercised in these areas

5/13/2009

• Tunnel construction is approximately 50% complete and the tunnel utilities have begun to be installed
• The tunnel is scheduled to be fully complete by June 19th
• A utility outage is scheduled for May 23 to tie-in the tunnel utilities

4/20/2009

• Tunnel construction is approximately 40% complete and the tunnel utilities have begun
• The tunnel is scheduled to be fully complete by June 19th
• There will be a steam/condensate/chilled water and compressed air outage to Space Science and Hamman Hall the weekend of April 25th in order to install taps and valves in the piping system
• Concrete has been poured at the entry to the construction site to reduce mud on Campanile Drive

• Site preparation and construction is scheduled to commence the week of Feb. 23.
• One large tree and several smaller trees will be relocated to the South Plant within the next two weeks
• Design continues on the project and the first phase of the project has been sent to the City of Houston for permitting
